Foreword
This story takes place in a different universe. Professor Charles Xavier and his team of mutants have fought for many years against the mutant-hating humans, and a tentative peace has gradually prospered throughout the world. But frequent battles still rage among more militant factions, and no one knows what changes the future will bring.
In an effort to ensure the survival of mutant-kind, Xavier has encouraged his students to join in limited or lifelong partnerships, and to have as many children as possible. The Mansions roster continues to grow each year as more and more names are added to Beasts genetic database.
Xaviers son, Peter, is the eldest. His thick white hair marks him as Storm's child, and he wears her calm dignity around him like a warm cloak. His precognitive skills are growing at a startling rate, and recently he has developed a teleportational skill similar to Nightcrawlers abilities.
Rogue and Gambit's daughter, Serena, is a few months younger. Her wavy, russet hair is white-streaked like her mother's, but her eyes range from emerald green to dark red as her spurious moods change. She takes pride in her abilities to fly and kinetically transform solid objects.
Chronologically, she claims thirteen years of age. But the children of the atom mature much more rapidly than their human counterparts. Peters lanky frame is already developing rock-hard muscles, and his voice has dropped to a steady baritone.
Rina is on the verge of womanhood...and is terrified that her mothers deadly legacy may be lurking in the wings, waiting to claim another victim...
"Seras birth was the catalyst...you and I are the key to the future. Together we will change the world, make it safe for our children and hers...
Peter
had said it, and Serena trusted his powers implicitly. So it must be true.
Already she could feel his awesome life-force
at work in her weary body, changing it, gaining strength.
Cody would understand...perhaps, in his own
nebulous way, hed even helped them take that first crucial step along their
predestined path. Where else could that ghostly light have originated?
Rogue would understand, too. Shed have
to, because the last vestige of her childhood love was still alive...inside the child that
Rina and Peter had just created here, where Cody had lived, and loved, and died.
Serena looked up at the distant full moon, and
took a deep, steadying breath.
Her whole life was about to change.
She hoped that she was up to the challenge.
The End...?
